Dye testing to find water leaks

To investigate and determine where your water leaks are coming from, Jackal Plumbing will often use a drain dye.  It is a straightforward process. This is how we do it!

  • Choose the Correct Dye

We will need to select a dye that is suitable for the purpose. Drain dyes are typically available in various colors, but for detecting leaks, a bright and easily visible color like fluorescent green, red, or blue is what we find works best. Drain Dye is a water colourant used to locate leaks in plumbing, tracing pipe locations, detect drain damage and water pathways.  It is non-toxic to the environment and odourless.

  • Prepare the Dye Solution

Prepare the dye according to manufacturer, sometimes multiple colours if checking more than one area.

  • Introduce the Dye to the Plumbing System

Pour the prepared dye solution into the plumbing system or the area where you suspect leaks.  This could include sinks, drains, toilets, or outdoor drainage systems.

  • Observe for Leaks

Once the dye is introduced into the system, observe the areas where leaks are suspected. Look for any signs of the dye appearing where it shouldn’t be. This could include spots of color appearing on walls, floors, or ceilings, or even in outdoor areas where waterproofing is a concern.

  • Clean Up

Once we have completed the leak detection process and addressed any identified issues, we clean up any spilled dye and dispose of the solution properly according to local regulations.
